Hailey was surprised by Nick’s wariness when she told him about the arrangement with Brady and the baby.

“This is a bit overboard for Linnie to ask this of you, don’t you think? A two-week-old baby and a four-year-old?”

Hailey studied Nick. He was a kind, generous man. She understood his concern, but this was special. Very special.

Nick gave her a steady look. “I’m afraid you’re getting too involved, and I don’t want you to get hurt, that’s all. We’ll help this time, but I hope it doesn’t become a habit.”

“This one favor of mine can affect four lives in an everlasting, joyful way,” Hailey said, believing it with all her heart. “The fact that Mac and Linnie are both foster kids means even more to me. Don’t worry. I’ll get up with the baby and try to keep her quiet during the night so you can sleep.”

“Aw, Hailey, you know that’s not why I’m upset. I’m worried that you’re doing this in part because you aren’t pregnant yet. Another thing that concerns me is that we don’t know Linnie that well and we’ve never met Mac.”

“You will soon. Linnie is a good mother. I see how she is with Brady and for a short time, how she’s been with Luna. That speaks more to me than anything. I’m not going to take back my word.”

When Nick’s arms wrapped around her, Hailey felt better. She and Nick didn’t argue much because they understood one another. In this case, there was no going back. She’d made a promise to Linnie and she’d keep it.

“I love you, Hailey,” said Nick, nuzzling her neck. “Let’s not disagree. We’ll work together to take care of Brady and Luna. It’ll be practice for us.”

“We’ve always talked about five children. Maybe after we do this, we’ll think smaller.”

Nick chuckled. “It doesn’t mean we won’t continue trying for many more than that. Practice makes perfect.”

She laughed and stood on her toes to kiss him.
